The Training

C.A.L.M. Training
for Barbers & Community Partners

A Life-Saving Approach to Suicide Prevention

Grooming Resources & Opportunities, Inc. (GRO) invites barbers and community partners throughout the Greenville community to participate in CALM: Counseling on Access to Lethal Means training.

Barbers and trusted community members are often in a unique position: people talk to you. People trust you. And sometimes, those conversations matter more than you know.

CALM provides practical tools to help you respond when someone may be at risk for suicide. Scroll below to choose your training date.

What Is CALM?

Counseling on Access to Lethal Means (CALM) is an evidence-based suicide prevention approach focused on reducing an at-risk person's access to highly lethal means, particularly firearms and dangerous medications, during periods of crisis.

The approach is collaborative and designed to help preserve life, liberty, dignity, and personal autonomy.

What You'll Learn
Through CALM training, participants will learn how to:

  • Recognize when a conversation about access to lethal means may be necessary
  • Approach sensitive conversations respectfully and without judgment
  • Discuss temporarily reducing access to firearms and dangerous medications
  • Work collaboratively with individuals and families during periods of increased suicide risk
  • Become better equipped to support people within their communities

This training is designed for:

Barbers • Community Leaders • Community Organizations • Helping Professionals • Trusted Community Partners

You do not have to be a mental health professional to play a meaningful role in suicide prevention.
